Forgotten subscriptions are the silent killers of Indian household budgets. A 2025 industry report projects India's OTT subscription market alone will reach $13 billion by 2030—yet the average Indian user loses track of 3–5 active subscriptions at any given time. When you add UPI AutoPay mandates, card e-mandates, app store renewals, and SaaS tools, the leak becomes significant.
The Real Cost of Forgetting: By the Numbers
₹2,400–₹4,800/year
Average money lost to forgotten OTT subscriptions per Indian household (3–4 unused plans at ₹149–₹299/month).
5+ payment rails
UPI AutoPay, card e-mandates, Google Play, Apple App Store, and net banking standing instructions.
48-hour rule
RBI mandates that card e-mandates must send a pre-debit notification at least 24 hours before charging.
₹13B by 2030
Projected size of India's OTT subscription market, driven by affordable mobile data and bundled plans.
The Cancellation Rule: Stop the Payment Source, Not the App
Before cancelling anything, build a complete list. Check these sources:
- UPI app AutoPay or Mandate section
- Card e-mandate emails and bank statements
- Google Play → Payments and subscriptions
- App Store → Account → Subscriptions
- Email receipts and merchant billing emails
- Bank SMS alerts for recurring debits
UPI AutoPay: The Leak You Forgot
UPI AutoPay is now the dominant subscription rail in India for OTT, utilities, and insurance. According to NPCI, UPI AutoPay allows recurring payments up to ₹2,000 without PIN entry—making it frictionless for merchants but easy for users to forget.
Open your UPI app (PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, or your bank's UPI app). Navigate to AutoPay or Mandates. Review active mandates and cancel the ones you no longer need. The exact menu path varies by app:
- PhonePe: Profile → AutoPay & Mandates → Active → Cancel
- Google Pay: Profile → Payments & mandates → AutoPay → Cancel
- Paytm: Profile → UPI & Payment Settings → AutoPay → Cancel
- Bank UPI apps: Usually under "Mandates" or "Recurring Payments" in the UPI section
If the mandate is still active after you cancel, raise a dispute in the UPI app within 7 days of the debit. NPCI's dispute resolution framework requires the bank to respond within 5 working days.
Google Play Subscriptions
Open the Google Play Store app. Tap your profile → Payments and subscriptions → Subscriptions. Tap a subscription to see details and cancel. If you cancel, you keep access until the current billing period ends.
Critical: Uninstalling the app does not cancel the subscription. Google Play will continue billing through your linked UPI AutoPay or card. For detailed steps, see Google's official cancellation guide.
Apple Subscriptions
On iPhone, go to Settings → [Your Name] → Subscriptions. Tap a subscription and choose Cancel. On Mac, open App Store → Account → Account Settings → Subscriptions → Manage. Deleting the app from your home screen does not stop the billing.
Apple's official guide confirms: if there is no Cancel button or you see an expiry message in red text, the subscription has already been cancelled. For full device-specific instructions, see Apple's subscription cancellation support.
Card and Bank Recurring Mandates
Card e-mandates appear in bank statements with descriptors like "ECOM," "RECUR," or "SI-" followed by a merchant abbreviation. Under RBI's e-mandate framework, banks must:
- Send a pre-debit notification at least 24 hours before charging
- Provide a simple cancellation mechanism (net banking, mobile app, or SMS)
- Display all active mandates in the customer's account
To cancel: log in to your bank's net banking or mobile app, navigate to Cards → Recurring Payments or Standing Instructions, and revoke the mandate. If the option is not visible, call customer care and quote the mandate reference number (URN) from the pre-debit SMS.
Merchant Websites
For direct merchant subscriptions (SaaS tools like Notion, Canva, hosting providers like Hostinger, or newsletters), log in to the merchant website and go to Billing or Account Settings. Cancel from there. If you cannot find the option, contact merchant support with your subscription ID.
Common Indian merchant subscriptions to audit:
OTT & Streaming
Netflix (₹149–₹649), Prime Video (₹299/mo or ₹1,499/yr), Disney+ Hotstar (₹149–₹299), SonyLIV, Zee5, JioCinema Premium
Music & Audio
Spotify (₹7/day–₹199/mo), Apple Music (₹99/mo), YouTube Music Premium, Gaana Plus, Wynk (Airtel)
Productivity & SaaS
Microsoft 365 (₹4,899/yr), Google One (₹130–₹650/mo), Notion, Canva Pro, Adobe Creative Cloud
News & Reading
The Hindu (₹199/mo), Economic Times Prime, Bloomberg Quint, Kindle Unlimited (₹169/mo)
Save Cancellation Proof
After cancelling, save the confirmation email or screenshot. If you are charged again, this proof helps you dispute the charge with your bank or UPI app. Indian banks and UPI apps typically ask for proof before reversing a debit.
What to save:
- Screenshot of the cancelled mandate (UPI AutoPay)
- Email confirmation from Google Play / Apple
- SMS confirmation from your bank (card mandates)
- Invoice or cancellation email from the merchant
What to Do If You Are Still Charged
- Contact the merchant first with cancellation proof. Most reputable services refund accidental renewals within 14 days.
- UPI AutoPay: Raise a dispute in your UPI app within 7 days. NPCI rules require resolution within 5 working days.
- Card charges: Contact your bank to block the merchant or cancel the mandate. Quote the URN from the pre-debit SMS.
- Document everything: Maintain a folder of cancellation screenshots and emails for at least 3 billing cycles.
The 4-Step Cancellation Checklist
1. Discover
Audit all 6 sources: UPI mandates, card statements, Play Store, App Store, email receipts, and bank SMS alerts.
2. Cancel
Cancel from the payment source, not the app. Uninstalling does not stop billing.
3. Document
Save screenshots, emails, and SMS confirmations as proof of cancellation.
4. Monitor
Watch your next 2–3 statements. If charged again, dispute with proof within 7 days.
